- Remembering my Uncle, William "Billy" Randolph Powell
Uncle Billy was taken from us almost 5 years ago. I remember him with such fondness. I was asked to gather up some photos of him and his family. I had a wonderful time remembering the smile on his face and the joy in his heart. He was a very special man that never had a cross word and always had a joke to tell. I can still hear him saying, "Great Day in the Morning!" Rest in Peace Uncle Billy. I'll see you again when I get to Heaven. Love, Janet

- Remembering Grandma Ethel
Ethel Gertrude Duke Rudacille
My Grandma Ethel was a lovely woman. Always had a smile on her face and beechnut gum in her pocketbook. She loved the Lord and you could always count on some good eating at her home. She and Gran were the ideal couple. He gardened and she canned the vegetables he brought in from the garden. She loved picnics and having her family around.
I miss you Grandma Ethel. I'll see you when I get to Heaven.
Love, Janet

A few weeks ago, my good friend Michelle Savoy Rasa called me and asked if Connie and I could make a bra for a mermaid that belongs to her dad. She has young boys at home and they have lots of friends over. Michelle said that she wanted to cover up the hideous nipples on the mermaid. She said the mermaid was life size. We talked about what needed to be done. I asked her to send me some photos of it so we'd know what we were dealing with. I've included those she sent me in the beginning of this show.
Ronnie brought the mermaid over to Connie's shop so we could work on it there. She is mounted on a rock and is extremely heavy. We could swivel her, but actually moving her was next to impossible for the two of us.
The condition of the mermaid was very sad to see. While she was intact, she was covered in rust from being down at the beach house. Connie and I talked about it and the restoration project began.
I asked Michelle to give me some history about the mermaid she asked Connie and I to work on.
"Approx. 20 years ago MT and his cousin Stout went to First Monday in Canton TX .. They met a local artist that was selling fish made from metal.. MT inquired about a mermaid and the artist told him if he could draw... he could make it . MT and the artist sketched out a picture right there at the booth and the artist said he could do it ... about a month after that the artist was finished and Stout drove out to the man's studio he had behind his house and picked it up.. My dad recalls him living in Fort Worth and his cousin says it was Arlington.. ... The artists initials (Jam) are on the mermaids hand.. the original cost of the mermaid was 1500.00.
Each piece was hand cut and welded .. using metal sheets.. not sure what type of metal.. its original color was kind of platinum ... I'm looking for a photo of it."
Though I've Googled, I cannot find the original artist.... JAM. Hopefully MT or Stout will eventually remember the name. I wish to give the artist credit for an awesome job on this mermaid. She's really beautiful. I can only imagine how much he enjoyed creating her for MT.
If you see this show and know the artist, please send the information to jcolvin4@gt.rr.com.
Thank so much Michelle for thinking of Connie and I when you needed this project done. We're both sending prayers for your Dad and your entire family.
We love you!

- Fire at TPO Lease June, 2011
From KFDM Website
June 09, 2011 10:49 AM

HARDIN COUNTY - A fire that burned more than 1,000 acres in Hardin County is now contained, according to information provided to KFDM News by Hardin County Sheriff Ed Cain.
The fire broke out Wednesday off FM 1293 in Honey Island. It's one of a number of wildfires that have broken out in Southeast Texas in recent weeks.
The Texas Forest Service and all volunteer fire departments in Hardin County helped fight the fire.
Investigators are searching for the cause.
Some families voluntarily left their homes after the Sheriff's Office encouraged them to evacuate. They went to the courthouse annex building. All of them returned home Wednesday night.
There were no injuries and no homes were lost, according to Sheriff Cain.
"It's pretty much contained," the sheriff told KFDM News during a telephone conversation Thursday morning. "They're talking about bringing in Black Hawk helicopters to work hot spots so embers won't blow and start other fires."
The sheriff says "things are almost back to normal" although some smoke remains in the area.
"We encourage people to obey the burn ban and not burn," said Sheriff Cain. "If you're barbecuing don't leave the fire unattended."

Honey Island wildfire from Wednesday now fully contained...
Update: The fire near Honey Island is now fully contained, those evacuated Wednesday have been allowed to return home. Firefighters were out there until 3 am Thursday, and were back on the scene Thursday.
Several fire departments assisted the Texas Forest Service in response to another fire in Hardin County that burned about 1500 acres and is now contained.
The fire was reported to be 4.5 miles south of Kountze near the corner of FM 1293 and Old Honey Island Rd. Hardin County resident, Mike Templet tells 12 News HD the fire is burning near the Old Honey Island swimming pool. A 12 News HD crew on the scene says the fire has crossed FM 1293 and headed towards FM 1003.
Hardin County Sheriff Ed Cain says authorities evacuated the area from FM 1293 and Old Honey Island Road to FM 1003. A helicopter dropping water assisted firefighters.
The Silsbee Volunteer Fire Department, Kountze Fire Department, and Hardin County Sheriff's Office all assisted in the operation.

- Coleus Mama for Alice in Sweden
Alice's husband contacted me about creating a very special Coleus sculpture for her with the only stipulation being that she could watch as we created it. I am going to post the creation of this sculpture in stages. Each day as we work on it, we'll take plenty of photos. I will compile the photos and put this all into a slide show presentation, adding to it as we go along.
DAY 1
We started out this afternoon looking over some of the "heady" items we've got in our stash. We've got all kinds of things that we can use for a head. Everything from Dolphins, to Hearts, Big glass ones! Anything we think can possibly be used for a head is in this box.
DAY 2
Most folks would say that we didn't accomplish doodly squat on Day 2. On the contrary, we feel that we scaled a mountain.
DAY 3 Connie and I worked on the leaves. We also figured out how to create a square stem for the Coleus Mama.
DAY 4 We've replenished our gases and decide to create her shoes and legs. We also attached the leaves we'd already cut out.
DAY 5 We cut the main stem so she'd be easier to ship to Sweden. Added flowers to her hat and made her jewelry. Then torched the sculpture with color.
She's complete now and absolutely gorgeous! I hope you will enjoy watching her creation. She's been so much fun to work on. I sure wish I was hand delivering her to Sweden!
- 2010-02-28 Firing Up the New Tool(s)
Rick bought me a pair of Pneumatic AIR SHEARS to cut copper with for Christmas. Today was the first day we've had a chance to use them. We opened the wrapper of the box, read the instructions and needed pneumatic oil. We went to go get some. Got back to the shop and set it up to use. Connie took the first few cuts and realized immediately that it wouldn't curve like we needed it to. So I called Rick and he got out the receipt. We took it back to Harbor Freight and they exchanged it for a Pneumatic AIR NIBBLER with a LASER. We got back to the shop and read the next set of instructions. We are sticklers for making sure we do things safely and correctly. We had to get the air pressure up to a certain PSI and make sure it didn't exceed that. You will see Connie making the first cuts with both tools today. She forgot to turn the laser on, but you can clearly see how cool this is going to be for creating sculptures! I've set this slide show to run at 0.5 seconds per frame so you can watch it like a slow motion video. I wish I'd thought to use the video, but I was using Hillary's new camera and it was my first time to use it. I felt comfortable taking still shots. If you will train your eyes to the center of the screen through the whole show you will see the bits of copper flying off the sheet of copper. Pretty neat.... if I do say so myself!
I love Hillary's new camera!!! Without further ado, Firing Up the New Tools!!!

- Creation of Kinetic Copper Sculpture
Just prior to receiving the email from Balvenie about this project, we made a butterfly/caterpillar cage. Balvenie asked us to create a sculpture that would hang from the arbor moon gate that he'd built himself. Balvenie is a very talented woodworker that we met on davesgarden.com in the artisans forum. He asked if we'd be willing to "document" the creation with photos so that other artisans might see what all was involved in creating a sculpture from copper.
During the week that Penelope was created, over 10,000 photos were taken, edited and written about. Each evening I'd show what had been done the previous day. By the time the week was over, the forum thread had been viewed 2,000+ times.
From the beginning of this project, Connie and I wanted the nymph to be "functional". Perhaps make her into a wind chime? A Planter? Light up her Head?
My mind was still in the butterfly "mode" when I said, it would be neat if she were trying to catch a butterfly.
Connie got this look in her eye and said, "Oooooooooooooooohhhh! I'm seeing it!" So we discussed what would need to be made to make this work. We'd need a net and a butterfly. We'd need some way to have these things hang in front of her so that she'd balanced.
We didn't want to "let on" what she'd be doing, just in case it didn't work. So we'd plan what we could show each day and what we couldn't, knowing that at the end of the week, they'd see her "in action".
Creating Penelope was like giving birth to a child. She was so much fun. These slide shows should loop one to the next. There is a lot of dialog that goes with the photos, so you can pause the scenes at any time to read, turn off the captions, and adjust the volume on the sound. I hope you'll enjoy watching Penelope come to life!

Back in October we took some firearms and headed to the shooting range that Robbin is a member of. Spent several hours with Hillary and Cory and sited in the rifles, etc. This was great practice for both Hillary and myself.
Cory spent time in Iraq and is very familiar with the AR-15. He's showing Hillary how to shoot it.
- Hillary and Jolie Carve a Pumpkin for 2010 Halloween
Hillary has watched Dad carve pumpkins before, but never done it herself. She and Jolie went to the store, picked out the pumpkin and bought both a book and the tools to carve this awesome pumpkin.
I was in charge of taking photos. During the carving, Jolie told Hillary there was something in her nose. It was a bead from a Mardi Gras necklace that somehow got into her nose while she was at her Daddy's house. Once that was removed, the carving began again.
Then Dinner was ready. We had leftovers from the lease, including some beef ribs. You'll see Rick holding one while Grace gets the meat off. First time I've ever seen Rick give either of our dogs a bone. They didn't chew them completely as most dogs would have. They really enjoyed that.
I think the pumpkin turned out magnificent, but I'm a bit biased. :-)
I hope you enjoy watching Hillary and Jolie carve this pumpkin.

- My trip to Bentonville July 2010
You might as well get something to drink before you click on Start Slideshow so you can enjoy it better. There are lots of photos and videos I want to share with you.
I spent almost a month at Mom's house in Bentonville. We had a wonderful time just being together. Mom was worried I'd be bored. That was far from what happened. Each day we found something to do to keep us occupied. Mom got a head start on rescuing plants from Lowe's so there was lots of color when I got there. We made a half a dozen trips to Lowe's and found some great deals on beautiful Petunias, Marigolds and Hibiscus. Hopefully the Hibiscus will survive Virginia's harsh winters and they will bloom again next year.
Last year I took photos of the outside of the house, but none inside. This year I decided to do a video tour of the inside of the house. I originally posted just the video tour here, but have now inserted photos along the way of the same parts of the house as on the tour.
While I was there, Mom bought a new TV for the living room and a web cam so I could keep up with my family. When I got back to Texas, the first thing I did was to buy a web cam for us so I can keep up with Mom.
Needless to say, the month passed much too quickly for both Mom and I.

Jolie and I went to Baytown to visit Jen Jen and the kids. We had a great time swimming at the Olympian Pool.
- Memorial Weekend 2010
Rick and I spent Memorial Day at the deer lease. It was just the two of us and we enjoyed the solitude of the woods.
We went out to where one of the cameras was set up. I "got to be the crow" (using a crow call) and heard a deer blow and run off. That was the first experience I've had of hearing them blow. Rick said I did a good job "being the crow".
We were coming back in from checking the cameras. I saw a sky so absolutely beautiful I had to stop to get photos. I'm so glad I did too. It was really hot on Sunday afternoon. We had a small storm blow through Sunday evening, which we really appreciated. The weather cooled considerably after the storm.
I hope everyone had a lovely holiday. Remember those that serve and have served our country, not only today, but every day! They are our heroes!

- Taking a Tree down in the back yard
C and S Tree Service came by and gave us a very reasonable bid to take down a tree that died after Hurricane Ike came through and sheered off the top of it.
Dave and Brian and their crew did an awesome job of taking down the tree and trimming up the one next to it that had a waybigo dead branch in it.
If you need tree service, I'd recommend these guys.

- 2010 May, Having fun at the Lease
Rick found a snake in the woods. It was red, black and yellow. We weren't sure if it was a CORAL snake or a KING snake. CORAL is poisonous and KING eats other snakes. Rick captured him and put him into a Home Depot 5 gallon bucket, put the lid on and put a concrete block on top. Had several folks look at him and they said he was a KING snake because the yellow was much more defined on a CORAL snake. So before we left yesterday, he held the snake. He didn't seem to feel threatened and squirmed all over rick's hand (with a leather glove on) then he let the snake go. Found out it WAS a Coral snake when we got home!
- 2010 - Arson on the Number 1 Blind Spot
We've been hunting about 3/4 of a mile down the road from our camp since 2008-2009. We call this area the Number 1 spot. Having a trail camera set up close to the feeder, we have a considerable amount of photos from that area. We've seen several deer there and just recently saw a pretty big hog.
When we returned from San Antonio after Easter we found out that the area just past the first tank pad had been burnt. We assumed that either the timber company or the gas company had done a "controlled" burn because of the way the trenches had been cut.
We decided that with the other tank pad going in we might as well change hunting spots. So last week we moved our camera to a different location for scouting.
This past Saturday and Sunday we were riding past our Number 1 spot and noticed that it too had been burnt. But this time there was a sign that said it was ARSON.
We rode in to see if our equipment, still in place, had been damaged. The road we normally take was what they trenched to break the fire. The tree stand at the front was fine. Our blind was secure on the "good side". We rode over to check on the feeder and it was fine too.
Rick and I rejoiced that we'd moved the camera the week before because the tree that it was on was burnt half way up the tree. The camera would have been ruined, with no recompense. We might have gotten photos of the arsonist. And we might not have. Since we moved the camera, we definitely didn't get any photos of the arsonist.
I took photos with my cell phone showing what I saw this past weekend. I didn't have my camera with me or I would have taken many more photos.
If you know anything about these fires please contact the Texas Forest Service at the number on the sign.
UPDATE: The Arsonist was caught!!!

Joe Bell invited us to the races. What an exciting night it was. We got to see him race at the Golden Triangle Raceway Park. Rick, Hillary and I went and had a great time watching all of the vehicles sliding around the oval track. It got quite cool before the night was over, but we still enjoyed the thrill of the races. Hillary took her camera and so we got some pretty awesome shots. Some of these are not going to be in focus. Some will be. Watch for Joe's #7 car. All show the excitement of the night! Way to go Joe!!!
- 2010 - February

I had a lot of fun going through my photos looking for you!
Mom, I have enjoyed your company so much over the years. As you said before, we are friends. While it’s not exactly rare, I know some folks who just can’t say that about their mothers. I appreciate the wisdom and understanding that you’ve shown me for the past 50 years. I couldn’t have asked for a better role model for a mother. You have always made me proud! You’ve always been a beautiful lady!
I hope you have a lovely birthday!

These photos are in no particular order. I scanned most of them from the photos albums whose covers you will see in this show. Others were found in old Cigar Boxes. I've labeled each photo with Mom's help.

- Recycled Camoflage Purse
Everything on this purse was recycled, with the exception of the Chicago Screws. The purse has a neoprene koozie for holding a drink, a place for my Blackberry, a place to securely hold my pocket knife, a place to hang my keys, a pocket for business cards and pens, and many other pockets for other purposes. The interior is very roomy because everything is so organized. Plenty of room to carry a camera and a couple bottles of water, if necessary.
- Remembering Aunt Grace
Last year, when Aunt Grace died, Connie and I missed her funeral. Today Mom, Sterling and I installed the gravestone that Connie and I bought for Aunt Grace. We planted portulaca between Aunt Eltie and Aunt Grace and a beautiful knockout rose bush next to Grandma Ethel and Gran. The music you hear as you watch this is very special. There's a story that goes along with this music that is unbelievable. Truly Amazing!
- Remembering Diana and Lindsay
Mom and I went to the Raymond "Andy" Guest Park, not far from mom's house today. I knew Mom was reluctant to visit the park, but she knew I wanted to see the place that the Virginia family held the Trail of Roses Memorial Service for Diana and Lindsay where they spread their ashes. The park was absolutely beautiful and we couldn't have asked for better weather. We had a nice picnic at the park and then walked down to the river. Afterward, we drove around the park and visited the Cullers Lookout. I won't add any captions to this slide show. The photos speak for themselves.

- Stop to Smell the Roses
Many many years ago my parents took 8mm movies of our family. My Dad was overseas serving our country and my Mother wanted him to be able to see his children growing up. In the early 1990's, my parents lovingly spend hours and hours transferring these movies to VHS tapes for each of us and added music of the times to the silent movies. This was a huge labor of love they've given to us. Over the years, 2 of the 3 tapes disappeared. Last year, I had my tape transferred to Digital CD's and made copies for the family. This year, I've taken some screen shots from these CD's and cropped them to the images you are about to see. Most of the folks you see have gone on to be with the Lord now, so these images are extra special to my heart. I hope you enjoy them. The quality isn't superior, but the folks you see definitely are!

- The Dragon that Breathes Fire!
At the beginning of this year I read Eragon and Eldest, 2 books by a young man Christopher Paolini. I was so fascinated with Saphira the Dragon that I told Connie I wanted to create a dragon out of copper. I tried to explain what I wanted the dragon to look like. Connie looked at me like I’d lost my mind. I began collecting photos that I’d “googled” on Eragon and the dragon Saphira. I also bought the movie Eragon so we could watch the dragon in action, see musculature, and just get a general “sense” of the dragon. This is the first time in my life I’ve ever paid FULL PRICE for a movie! I knew it would be worth every dime I spent on it. I watched the movie several times and enjoyed it each time I watched. Watch as we breathe fire into his nostrils! Email us at JCOLVIN4@GT.RR.COM for details on ordering your own custom created sculpture.
